This is AUB-2 #060, the prototype for the Series IV models. I built this one for myself, and it's been my faithful player for the last several years. Almost everyone who has visited my shop has tried it out. I've played about 250 gigs with it so far. I haven't done some of the latest upgrades on it yet, such as the humbucking version of the M-pickup. I need it for the weekly sessions with my bluegrass band!
The color scheme on #060 was an experiment. A few years back, a customer sent in a sweet old Ampeg AMUB-1 for some repair work. It had been repainted black over the original red/black sunburst finish. Over the years, it had worn through the black around the edges of the body and some spots on the neck, leaving a thin red edging. It was very striking looking, so I decided to try to duplicate the look on #060. I sprayed a red base, then covered it with black, and then gently filed away the black on the edges. The headstock came out great. On the body, I had not fully filled the grain, so the red edges came out interrupted. It's a cool idea, but I need to work on the technique. I may eventually repaint #060's body, or I may just leave it alone.
AUB-2 #067 has a similar scheme, but with gold edging. It came out better, but was still a huge amount of work.
